The first real cold front finally rolls through South Florida. You grab a hoodie, switch the thermostat over to heat, and a few minutes later the whole house smells like burnt toast.
Take a breath. In most cases, this is completely normal.
Here's what's going on, when it's nothing to worry about, and when it's time to give us a call.
Why Your Heat Smells Like It's Burning
Most homes in Broward and Palm Beach County don't have a traditional furnace. They're heated by a heat pump or by electric heat strips tucked inside the air handler.
Those heat strips sit unused for ten or eleven months out of the year. During that time, a thin layer of dust settles on them. The first time they warm up, that dust burns off, and that's the smell you're noticing.
It usually fades within the first hour of running. After that, you shouldn't smell it again until next winter.
What's Normal
These are common and usually nothing to worry about:
A faint dusty or burning smell that goes away within an hour
A little steam coming off the outdoor unit on a chilly morning. That's the heat pump running a defrost cycle, and it's doing its job.
"Aux Heat" or "Em Heat" popping up on your thermostat when the temperature drops quickly. Your system is calling in backup heat to catch up.
A slightly warm, stale smell from the vents the first day or two
When It's Time to Call a Pro
Turn the system off and give us a call if you notice any of these:
The burning smell lasts more than an hour or gets stronger
It smells like burning plastic or hot wires instead of dust
You see smoke coming from a vent or the air handler
Your breaker trips when the heat kicks on
The system blows cool air even though it's set to heat
You hear loud buzzing, grinding, or banging
If your home has any gas appliances and you smell rotten eggs, leave the house right away and call your gas company or 911 from outside.
Quick Checklist Before You Switch to Heat
A few minutes now can save you a cold night later:
Change your air filter. A fresh filter means less dust and better airflow.
Vacuum your vents and returns. Less dust in the system means less smell.
Test it before you need it. Run the heat on a mild afternoon with a window cracked so the smell clears out fast.
Double check your thermostat. Make sure it's set to Heat and the batteries are fresh.
Clear around the outdoor unit. Keep plants, leaves, and lawn furniture at least two feet away.
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Especially important if you have a gas water heater, stove, or dryer.
Why This Matters More in South Florida
Here's the thing about heat in Florida. We only use it a handful of nights a year, so small problems go unnoticed for months. Then the one night it drops into the 40s, the system won't turn on.
That's not just uncomfortable. For babies, seniors, and anyone with health concerns, a cold house is a real problem.
Testing your heat now, before the next cold front, means you'll find out on your schedule instead of at 10 o'clock at night.
